Every now and then, when browsing through the hundreds of MMORPGs on offer, you come across a game that is different from the rest. Dark Swords is one such game. Avoiding both the ‘casual’ and ‘hardcore’ audience entirely, Dark Swords is a niche title that promises a gameplay experience unlike any other to those willing to take the extra time to learn and absorb its unique style.
To offer a point of similarity, Dark Swords is a Browser-Based MMORPG that closely resembles the age-old pen and paper RPG, Dungeons and Dragons. That is to say, it follows the path of the traditional RPG, and as such, places its value in complexity. In short: Dark Swords is as difficult a game to learn as it is to master; however, this complexity in turn offers a more in-depth, substantial and rewarding experience than most of its competition. The question remains: are you willing to learn?
If you’re new to the world of online gaming, and you’ve never played a game of Dungeons and Dragons; the concept is actually quite simple, and not at all unfamiliar. You first select a race (an Orc, Elf, Human, Dwarf or Drow), though you will not be asked to choose a class. Instead, you’ll need to allocate a number of points into one of 4 categories (Strength, Constitution, Dexterity and Intelligence), then, a weapon. Your personal distribution of your statistic points combined with your choice in weapon will in turn determine what you are proficient in using: thus, your very own class is born. Wizard, Warrior, Archer, Rogue? There’s no such thing. You are simply you, and you are good at what you do.
The complexity arises once you’ve actually begun to play. You’ll soon learn that almost anything is possible in the world of Dark Swords, and that in many ways; your own imagination is the limit. You could begin by completing a few quests and giving yourself some better equipment. Or you could learn one of the many, many professions on offer and begin to build your trade. Or you could explore a dungeon in search of hidden treasure. Or you could scour the globe for new and powerful magic to wield against your foes. There are limitless possibilities in the world of Dark Swords; however, they’re not handed to you on a silver platter. You need to take them.
Assuming that you’re interested, and that you’re willing to spend the time to get familiar with the game mechanics and interface, Dark Swords is a magnificent game that truly offers a traditional RPG experience in an online world. While this type of game usually suits players that are already experienced in the style, that shouldn’t discourage you new players to try it for yourself and experience the true form of the RPG.
