Review
Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of Neverwinter is an upcoming Facebook RPG from the developers Liquid Entertainment. The game adapts the D&D 4th Edition ruleset to the Facebook platform and in doing so provides the true tabletop experience in an online social environment. The publisher Atari promises to deliver an RPG experience deeper than anything currently available on Facebook, whether they accomplish this feat or not is still to be decided.
The foundation of your dungeon crawling is your character, and Heroes of Neverwinter allows you to choose your basic appearance, skills, feats, powers and spells. The appearance of your character currently only has some basic options, your aesthetics are mainly built around the equipment you own and this is where your personal flare will show. Players have the choice between four classes: Fighter, Wizard, Cleric and Rogue; each with individual skills, powers and stats that can be learnt and improved to build the ultimate hero to match your playstyle.
To level and grow in Heroes of Neverwinter you are required to do exactly what you might expect, traverse through dungeons and defeat the monsters within for loot and fame. The combat in the game is turn based and players may make one movement (within a limited area), use one attack skill, and use items (not limited) with each turn; taking turns with the enemy until one side has been completely wiped out.
The combat is very easy to pick up, and players can choose the difficulty of the dungeon they are visiting. Liquid Entertainment hasn’t left out the hardcore D&D fans however, the combat system goes very deep and hard modes provide a challenge for even the most adept tactician. There will be a total of 45 dungeons on launch, with more added regularly. If players defeat all the dungeons, or just want to try something a bit different then the game offers a Dungeon Creator for player’s level 10 and above. Using the Dungeon Creator players can create their own dungeons to test other players, receiving rewards for everyone who visits.
So how does this all fit into Facebook? Heroes of Neverwinter overall is a game where you command four heroes in a party to defeat dungeons, who better to have in your party than friends and other players from around the world and what better place to find these players than Facebook. Players can invite their friends to join their party (controlled by you) and while visiting dungeons, the players you recruit retain their skills and armor your friend has acquired; rewarding you with a strong companion and them with loot and xp.
Heroes of Neverwinter provides a turn-based RPG experience that players can drop in and out of as they please, this kind of portability and online functionality proves to be a great way to experience the Neverwinter world. With added chat features, achievement system and the endless amounts of user created content make this Facebook RPG one not to be missed.
