Review
Grepolis is a Browser-Based, 2D Strategy Massively Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy Game (MMORTS). It’s a bit of a mouthful, but in essence it describes a style of game that focuses on strategy and tactics rather than fast-paced Action or Role-Playing. Though, unlike many other games in this genre, Grepolis has been designed with the unfamiliar player in mind, and as such, makes for a great place to begin learning the art of the MMORTS.
Set in Ancient Greece, Grepolis is as rich in history and lore as it is in strategy and tactics. Starting out on small islands with access to shared resources that provide the platform for player cooperation and conflict, you begin your journey in Grepolis by learning the basic game mechanics from the Greek God, Ulysses. This part of the game, the tutorial, is designed to help you better understand exactly how to play.
During the tutorial you’ll learn the difference between the city and island overview, you’ll learn how to command your army to ransack computer-controlled villages, and a number of other early-game mechanics that will pave the way to your becoming a true Greek Hero, and wielding the true power of the Gods.
And if you’re already familiar with the MMORTS style, you’ll also learn that Grepolis is quite different to many other games you might have played. For starters, there are no quests to complete or heroes to control. Instead, your focus will be on resource, research and military management. There are a total of 23 buildings that you can build in Grepolis, and all of them will help your city grow in size and reputation through the islands of Greece.
Some buildings, such as the Academy, will allow you to perform specific tasks, such as Research. Research will allow you to choose a ‘specialty’ for your city, such as whether to focus you military strength on land or sea, or which God you’d like to govern your city, as choosing Zeus over Hera or Athena will give you a number of different spells and abilities, making every choice count.
As mentioned in the beginning of this review, Grepolis is a MMORTS with a focus on helping players who are unfamiliar with the genre learn their way around. As such, it’s a game that won’t take very long to get used to, and in less than an hour you’ll be well on your way to building your first Empire. That said, the buck doesn't stop in the beginning; there’s a deep resource management system embedded within the ancient walls of Grepolis, and with realistic visuals and a strong strategic focus, it’s a game that will likely keep you engaged for months at a time – all without the need for a heavy download or long-winded registration. In fact, you could be playing in less than a minute.
