Welcome to the world of Flash; or, as you may better know it, 'Games You Can Play Through Your Internet Browser'. Gunshine.net is a sterling example of the progression the Flash/Browser genre has made in recent years, offering a complete MMORPG experience without ever needing to download, sign-up or fill out anything.
This is an important evolution in casual and social gaming, as it's the lengthy sing-ups and long downloads that typically keep new and emerging gamers from crossing the line into the virtual world. Gunshine.net, set in a post-apocalyptic warzone/prison, looks as though it's been designed to do just that. There are likely hundreds of thousands of people out there that would love to play this type of game: shoot guns, blow up cars, work with friends to take down enemies -- what you and I would call an MMO, really -- but they're not computer-savvy like us, and up until now, they've never tried to play.
But those days are behind us, and with the upcoming Flash 11 poking its head around the Internet's darkest corners today, this isn't likely to change. The casual/social gaming genre is bigger and better than ever before, and games like Gunshine.net are leading the charge. Click 'Play Now' and start a timer. No, really. Do it. I bet you 50 bucks that you'll be playing in under 30 seconds. 30 seconds. And that's only the beginning.
The gameplay in Gunshine.net, as complex as it can be after a few hours of play, is as smooth and simplistic as they come; left-click the screen to move, right-click the screen to shoot. For the tutorial portion of the game, this is basically all you'll be required to do; you're stuck in some kind of prison, you see, and you're going to have to escape. Once you find your shotgun, it's all downhill.
Of course, as you progress through the world of Gunshine.net you'll begin to develop your character much like you would in a less-casual MMORPG like World of Warcraft; as you kill enemies you'll be rewarded with cash and experience, which in turn will allow you to purchase new items, weapons and skills for your character. Very simple, very effective.
However, it's the Facebook connectivity that makes Gunshine.net the must-play action RPG that it is; you see, whenever you complete a hard quest, or kill a tough boss, or obtain an awesome new weapon, you'll be prompted to announce this victory on Facebook. This is handled automatically, and by doing so you not only ensure that your friends will begin playing with you shortly, but too, you unlock new content within the game: Mercenaries.
Mercenaries are NPC characters that follow you in your missions and help you take down opponents; the more credibility you earn through Facebook, the better Mercenaries' you can hire. So let's recap: play within 30 seconds, for free, kill people, shoot cars, complete thousands of quests and experience true RPG progression through your Internet Browser. Have I forgotten anything? Oh, right: you don't need to have EVER played a video game before to completely enjoy Gunshine.net, and for those of us that have, the experience is only slightly sweeter. Does it get any better?
