Some of you may remember a preview we did recently on Lego Universe, where I had nothing but good things to say; praising the games simplicity, accessibility and general polish. I decided that leaving it there would be quite unjust, and that the game still had a lot to offer and I was yet to experience it all.
Today I’m going to delve further into the LEGO Universe, and sort through the blocks, to fill you guys in about the game a little more. Going into games that appear to target a somewhat young demographic, often sets off alarm bells in my head that sound, ‘Warning: toned down, simplified combat. Steer clear!’
Thankfully, as I ventured further into the LEGO Universe and started to encounter some of its deadly foes, all the fears and doubts I usually would have about these types of games was promptly questioned and disposed of.
The combat in LEGO Universe is seemingly very simplistic to anyone first encountering it; however, it quickly becomes apparent that it’s no simple task feat to take down a group of enemies. Underestimating the complexity of the system can result (as I experienced first-hand) in your avatar’s swift death.
Once you begin to understand the dynamics, and begin to learn when to attack, when to defend, when to jump and when to use your skills, the true greatness of the combat comes through.
It’s a simple, click-to-attack type of combat, but features such as being able to build a turret using stray blocks of your opponents ‘corpse’, really brings the combat alive and ensures each encounter doesn’t lack variety.
It’s the small things…
One thing that instantly struck me as I began questing was the lack of the dreary and long-winded quest information that seems to plague the NPCs of most MMOs out there.
It’s simple, here’s your mission, here’s why you’re doing, now go do it!
That’s the basic delivery of quests in LEGO Universe and it’s completely refreshing; I know exactly what I’m doing because I’ve been given a perfect amount of information. There’s nothing that will have me hulking over the keyboard, reading useless text to figure out what I’m doing; nor is there such minimal information I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.
This is just one of the tell-tale signs of LEGO Universe that shows it has been made with the idea of accessibility in mind.
I consider myself quite the impatient person when it comes to MMOs, often skipping much of NPC quest to make my game experience more efficient. You too? I could’ve guessed.
However, there is really no point in skipping anything in LEGO Universe, as it’s information delivery is efficient, and doesn’t try even the most impatient of gamers patience.
Alongside all of the typical, tried-and-tested MMO aspects of LEGO Universe, is the immense amount of customisation options and creative freedom within the game.
Simply questing and looting enemies yields simple and impressive items. I found myself in possession of a hat that changed colours based on my ‘mood’. It’s little quirky things like this that make low-level questing fun.
You’ll also come a across a lot of LEGO blocks on your adventures which can be taken back to a particular block of land of your choosing and used to craft yourself a headquarters. How you make your home depends entirely on the blocks you’ve acquired throughout the course of the game.
I decided, in true MMO fashion to craft a castle. It’s rewarding, and it’s also a great motivation to quest and loot.
Not only is there a large variety of items to collect in the game, as well as ways to use those items, there’s also various ways of playing. There are a number of different factions through which to acquire and carry out your quests, each with unique rewards.
Weapon and armour types are plentiful, and each give the player the opportunity to play their own way, be that with the traditional sword and shield or with dual laser cannons and the ability to summon robotic guardians to assist you in combat.
All of the great things that go into LEGO Universe are free to be experienced in the free-to-play version of the game; however, to get the full experience I’d advise upgrading to the premium membership option which literally opens up thousands of more options and makes all of the things I just discussed about the game really shine.
LEGO Universe is worth checking out whether you’re a hardcore MMO player or are just looking for an easily-accessible and quality online game. Try it today; click Go Play! ;)
